Rail giant charged in blaze
EDMONTON, Alta. — Two rail lines were formally charged on Nov. 19, after a forest fire destroyed 10 homes in the hamlet of Chisholm, Alta., last May.
Canadian National Railway (CN) and RaiLink each face one charge of conducting an activity in a protected area without exercising reasonable care.
CN also faces two counts of discarding burning material where it might result in a fire.
All told, it took 514 firefighters, 34 helicopters, 31 bulldozers and 45 water trucks to fight the blaze, which destroyed about 1,160 square kilometres of forest.
