TORONTO, Ont. – Fleet managers are constantly under pressure to reduce costs and increase efficiency while ensuring the safety of both drivers and the public.
Oklahoma-based Airgo Systems kept this in mind when it launched its commercial tire monitoring, maintenance and inflation hardware last year.
“Airgo Systems understands that existing tire inflation systems fall short in meeting the demands of commercial trucking fleets,” said Tony Ingram, president of Airgo Systems.
The Airgo system has over one million miles of test runs under its belt, including extreme temperature settings for runs in the southern U.S. or in northern Canada. The system has undergone water immersion testing for trucks pulling up to loading docks at ports, pressure wash testing, environmental testing, pressure relief testing and it has held up to military standards in order to run on military vehicles as well.
“It’s like an insurance policy for your business,” said Ingram.
With the Airgo inflation system, when a trailer tire loses pressure from a puncture or other seepage, a series of check valves automatically detects it and sends air from the vehicle’s pneumatic system to the tires requiring air even as the truck continues to move.
This allows the driver to make a safe exit from the road in order to repair the tire and avoid a blow out, which could endanger those around the truck and leave road gators behind.
When the system is activated, a warning indicator alerts the driver of the tire problem by a light mounted on the trailer in sight of the driver’s rear view mirror. This light can also be installed in the cab.
Since it doesn’t take long for air to escape a leaking tire, the Airgo system uses larger diesel and grease resistant air transfer tubes that deliver air at 8.3 cubic feet per minute, more than twice the industry average, said Ingram.
The system pays for itself with one tire blow out, Ingram claimed, pointing out that when a tire ruptures there will be downtime to repair it and perhaps even the wheel rim. With the Airgo inflation system the driver can continue the run until it is safe to stop or until he has reached his destination. And with constant air pressure while the vehicle is moving, the tire will go on with minimal damage.
Another benefit is fuel efficiency. Trucks are more fuel efficient when tires are at the proper pressure. “We have a lot of research and design time invested in this equipment,” said Ingram, “and that’s what sets us apart from the other systems out there.”
Airgo engineered the system to vent externally so there is no pressurized air building up in the hub. There is a dual air filtration in place to ensure there is no moisture introduced into the system, and because there are no internal moving parts, wear is significantly reduced.
Airgo officials realized an important part of designing a system such as this is that it needs to be user-friendly. The system can be installed in less than two hours without compromising the integrity of surrounding parts. It includes an expansion plug that can be removed in order to work on the axle.
The tire pressure gauge is designed so that only the driver can access the gauge and change the pressure as needed.
The system is available for all over-the-road tractor-trailers with a five-year, unlimited miles warranty.
