Waterloo Regional Police in Southern Ontario have charged a truck driver with driving with a handheld entertainment device following a serious collision in Wellesley Township.

On Jan. 22 at about 1:10 p.m., officers responded to a crash on Line 86 near Chalmers Forest Road involving two transport trucks and two other vehicles.

In an earlier news release, police said a brown Ford and a white Buick were involved in a minor collision and had been moved to the shoulder of the roadway.

While the vehicles were on the shoulder, a second crash involving two transport trucks occurred. During the secondary collision, one of the trucks struck the vehicles involved in the initial crash.

A 25-year-old man from the first collision was taken to an out-of-town hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 57-year-old transport truck driver was transported to an out-of-region hospital with serious injuries.

Following the investigation, police said the driver of one of the transport trucks — a 57-year-old man from Brant County — was charged Feb. 23 with dangerous operation of a conveyance and careless driving.

Police noted the investigation remains ongoing.
