Report identifies US highways where truckers most frequently park on highway ramps for rest
Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and New York are the states in which truck drivers most frequently park on highway ramps for rest, according to an analysis from Geotab.
The telematics provider analyzed 2.2 million parking events including 300,000 long-duration stops on U.S. highway ramps.

Typically, those trucks have traveled 520 miles (832 km) and been on the road for nearly 10 hours when parking on the ramps, indicating they are running out of legal driving time.
Highway ramp truck parking peaks mid-week on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, Geotab reports, when they often find authorized truck stops and rest areas are full.
Indianapolis, Ind., with the convergence of freight at I-65, I-70, I-69 and I-74, leads the country with highway ramp parking frequency. Los Angeles, New York-Newark and Chicago round out the top four locations.
“This data allows public and private sectors to move beyond anecdotes and implement targeted, capacity-building solutions to ensure drivers have the safe, authorized rest areas they require,” said Nate Veeh, associate vice president of business development, Altitude by Geotab. “The 2.2 million annual parking events on highway ramps are not random occurrences; they are a clear, data-driven signal of where our infrastructure investment is critically needed. Our analysis pinpoints freight hubs like Indianapolis, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York as primary stress points.”
