CTA raises concerns about Canada Post
As a Canada Post strike looms, the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) has raised concerns about the future of the Crown corporation.
This, after a report from the Industrial Inquiry Commissioner that included suggestions from the union and management that the organization extend its reach into the handling of parcel delivery.

“Expansion of parcel delivery, however, provides an opportunity – although it is very far from a sure thing – for Canada Post to continue its USO [Universal Service Obligation] and move toward sustainability. As discussed below, both Canada Post and CUPW [Canadian Union of Postal Workers] agree that a parcel-centric Canada Post is its future,” the report said.
“Both management and unions are attempting to identify the best path forward for Canada Post. However, the question which must be asked is – does a government organization need to be in this space competing against the private sector?” responded CTA president and CEO Stephen Laskowski in a press release.
The alliance also said it will be asking the Minister of Procurement, Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), and Canada Post to introduce measures that would eliminate the ability of for-hire trucking companies using forced labor and misclassified labor to compete for contracts sent out to bid by Canada Post.
“CTA has made these requests in the past, but there has been no action to date,” said Laskowski. “Following the release of this recent report, potential restructuring of Canada Post and a new government in Ottawa, we are hoping that action against contractors using misclassified and forced labor will be part of the eventual changes introduced to Canada Post.”

We need to save Canada post because it is the best option for rural parts of Canada. I think Canada
Canada Post is essential to rural communities and to the thousands of people who do not have access to reliable internet or those cannot afford it. Mail unites a country, provides support, comfort and news for many, as well as provides a means for billing and paying bills. It is a service that should be provided for taxpayers. However, it has been mismanaged for years. The Postal Union has held not only its members, but all Cnds, hostage for years. To be holding the establishment to a 1985 era agreement wrt to “ensuring job security” is criminal. They are broke and yet the union pushes for obscene concessions. In addition to hiring full-time mail delivery people instead of the part time people once employed in rural areas, who drive their own vehicles, CP has provided specialty vehicles including unreliable EV’s at astronomical costs. Paid holidays (now proposed at 7wks), pensions, pay increases and fewer hours worked- none of these “perks” are received by most Cnd workers. And all of them add to the bloat of a bankrupt CP. CP, like most gov orgs. needs to be cleaned out and cut back in size. It must eliminate bureaucracy, waste and bloat and start serving he public once again
We need to save Canada post for the rural parts of Canada and provide a fixed subsidy to buy new equipment or $22.00 per year per person times the number of people that live in Canada and increase the use of prison Labor to a max of 9000 people to help control costs with 2/3 of their wages going to cover repayments of money owed for crimes done, or back child support with a total wage of $18. 00 hour and of the $6 per hour half should kept until release or family support.
