Dana coats brakes for winter

Roadranger
Ice and grime from winter roads are harsh enough on brake components, but new ice-inhibiting compounds being spread on highways can cause an oxide layer to form on the brake shoe table that lifts and cracks the lining. Itís a phenomenon known as rust jacking, and itís bad news.

To resist this type of corrosion, the commercial vehicle systems group at Dana announced last month that it has reformulated the lining on its brake products. The new lining, called Spicer Silver Supreme, has shown a 75-per-cent improvement in life testing over other linings, the company says. It is now standard on all brake sizes, including Dana’s popular 12.25-inch low-profile brakes.

Also standard: E-coating the shoes on single anchor pin tractor and trailer brakes and double anchor pin trailer brakes. Dana Spicer E-coated brakes are 300-per-cent more resistant to rust jacking than competitive brake shoes, the company says.
