Peel Police bust re-VINning operation

by Today's Trucking

Peel Regional Police have busted a re-VINning scheme involving tractors and trailers, some of them stolen.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada defines re-VINning as: “the process whereby criminals illegally and fraudulently alter the VIN of a stolen vehicle to conceal its identity, enabling the criminal to register and sell the vehicle to an unsuspecting buyer.”

Police say they recovered $1.45 million in trucks, trailers and cargo.

On March 11, police responded to the report of a fraud in progress at a trucking yard and truck repair facility at Derry Road East and Beckett Drive in Mississauga, Ont.

Investigators from the Commercial Auto Crime Bureau conducted a search warrant the following day which led to the discovery of 14 re-VINned trailers, one stolen trailer, three re-VINned transports, and two stolen transports that were in the process of being dismantled.

Two of the trailers were refrigerated and contained stolen raspberries and beef, which were recovered and returned to the victims.

Charged are: Inderjit Singh Walia, a 50-year-old man from Brampton; and Narinder Shoker, a 43-year-old man from Brampton. Charges have not yet been proven in court.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Commercial Auto Crime Bureau investigators at 905-453-2121 ext. 3313.

  • The industry needs to set up a unit dedicated to tracing and recovery of stolen equipment and cargo with a office in the Brampton or Milton area and a second on in the Vancouver area. In my opinion all levels of gov and the trucking industry needs to set up safe affordable parking lots of at least 300 spots with 24 hr security and a gated area for loaded trailers and complete units

  • Unless those charged and convicted are punished to the highest level of the law – this type of activity will continue. Theft, overall drives up the costs of trucking and transportation of goods, which are then passed on to the consumer…
Better more secure overnight parking in high theft areas would be a nice touch. Plus, companies placing identifiers on the van trailers, such as large Unit #, or company logos could assist in quicker location and may even deter thieves (plain white trailers are not easily identified when there are thousands out there).

  • Well there’s a surprise!
It’s a well documented that East Indians are heavily involved in this cargo theft with the GTA area, now they’ve been caught trying to re VIN trucks, trailers , along with 2 East Indian in last two weeks trying to smuggle cocaine across Bluewater bridge. AGAIN!
