U.S. invests in truck parking, kills speed limiter proposal and slashes other regs
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has introduced a package of new initiatives and regulatory updates for the trucking industry aimed at “removing one-size-fits-all mandates, modernizing driver resources and slashing red tape.”
The package includes US$275 million for truck parking and kills the proposal for the mandatory use of speed limiters in the U.S.

“Truckers keep America running. While the country sleeps, truckers grind through the night to help keep shelves stocked, families fed, and businesses humming. It’s a job that requires grit and dedication. But for too long Washington, DC has made work harder for truckers. That ends today. Thanks to President Trump, we’re getting Washington out of your trucks and your business,” said Duff.
The trucking industry welcomed the announcements.
“As the leading mover of the nation’s freight, the concerns of our industry not only impact the 8.5 million Americans who work throughout trucking, but they also affect the countless businesses and families we serve across the country,” said American Trucking Associations CEO Chris Spear. “A safe and strong trucking industry is critical to America’s economic growth and security, and data-driven measures like these that reduce regulatory burdens are important steps toward that end.”
And the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association was equally pleased.
“These steps not only improve the daily lives of truckers across America, but also enhance safety for everyone on the road,” said OOIDA president and CEO, Todd Spencer.
“For years, truckers have urged Washington to address the severe shortage of truck parking, eliminate the dangers posed by a national speed limiter mandate, and give drivers greater control over their hours-of-service. We thank President Trump and Secretary Duffy for listening to the men and women behind the wheel who keep America’s economy moving.”
Among other initiatives contained within the package, the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will introduce new digital assets that are more user-friendly, including an update to the DataQ system to improve transparency. It also promises to eliminate 1,800 words from federal regulations to save truckers time and money and will renew its focus on double brokering.
In a separate announcement, Duffy said the feds will audit states providing commercial drivers licences to non-domiciled drivers, excluding those from Canada and Mexico.

Well yet again another uneducated politician has no idea of what they are doing … guessing that they haven’t heard the expression that “Speed kills” … speed limitors were put on for a reason – when you have an 80,000# tractor / trailers coming down the highway doing 80 – 90 miles an hr – and they will since there is not limit to how fast they can drive now – they will take full advantage of that . Get a driver who has been put into a position where he needs to react quickly and see how many accidents that occur because of their speed – hope whoever is injured sues the US Government and sues the POTUS as well for this asinine rule … eliminate the dangers posed by a national speed limiter mandate … what are the dangers?? The driver isn’t going to be going 40 miles per hr and hurt someone … Now they will also be speeding in residential areas – because they don’t have to be within the law … Wait till some driver falls asleep at the wheel doing 80 miles an hr with a fully loaded trlr of 45,000# and see what happens … how many will be killed then

If speed limters are to be used bring in overtime after 8 hours or 10on duty each day with a rate on payroll that 3 time a mortgage payment on a house or 4 times rent of a 3 bedroom apartment based on 5 days a week at 9 hours per day if the truck driver has 3 yrs experience or is doing OTR.
We truckers are treated with such disrespect on the roads. We are always getting cut off spit up on given the middle finger and taken for granted. The public around us don’t understand or don’t want to understand how vital the trucking industry is to their daily lives we play a part in Manufacturing, keeping our shelves stocked in grocery stores, auto parts stores, hospitals etc. Without us truckers, the U S wouldn’t exist the today. When a natural disaster strikes the U S. The trucking industry is there delivering supplies, food and water, etc and for that we are praised as heroes. When COVID 19 first hit. We truckers again were hailed as heroes for keeping our economy and the U S functioning and essential stuff moving and once the worse of the crisis past we went right back to being taken for granted.
It’s finally nice to have an administration that is helping the trucking industry and its drivers. We finally have an administration that’s addressing the problems we drivers face on a daily basis. Investing in the building of truck parking facilities is something no other administration has taken the time to address while this administration is. It’s also nice to have the lack of English proficiency back on the books as an out of service violation. The D O T and the FMCSA and the CVSA needs to make sure that all the states strictly enforces the English proficiency laws and as for having the drivers put speed governors in our trucks and killing that mandate. It would have been a dangerous to have all the trucks limited to a certain speed. The roads are safer letting trucks keep with the flow of traffic. It’s a great thing that the speed mandate is being killed off hopefully permanently. Thank you President Trump and Sean Duffy for helping out the trucking industry and acknowledging the hard work and dedication we drivers put into the country everyday to keep the flow of goods moving
