Women with Drive Summit to feature panel discussion with drivers, mechanic apprentice

OTTAWA, Ont. – A panel discussion is set at Trucking HR Canada’s second annual Women with Drive Summit to shed light on the lives of women who work in the trucking industry. The summit is scheduled for March 3, 2015 at the Crowne Plaza – Toronto Airport Hotel. 

The panel is to be moderated by James Menzies, execuive editor of Truck News and Truck West magazines.

The panel will include:  

  • Jennifer Duval, who began her driving career in a school bus in 2001 and graduated with an AZ licence in 2005. After working for three years as a long-haul driver with Kriska Holdings, she is now a local city driver and trainer.

  •  Helen Thorpe, who conducts road tests and delivers in-house orientation and training programs for Seaboard Transport. Her driving experience includes regional, long-haul and urban routes, while she has also served in dispatch and safety and compliance roles.

  • Samantha Sharpe, a first-year diesel mechanic apprentice with Nova Trucks. She comes to the industry after spending six years in early childhood education.

  • Alison and Katrina Theriault, who are team drivers with Clarke Road Transport.Alison, a former music instructor in the Royal Canadian Navy, has been driving since 2008, after she earned a Bachelor of Arts from Dalhousie University. Katrina has been working at her side as a team driver with Clarke Road Transport since 2013, after earning a business administration marketing diploma and working in a management role in the service industry.

“This panel is a direct response to feedback we received during our first summit,” said Angela Splinter, CEO of Trucking HR Canada. “Delegates wanted to learn more from drivers, technicians and/or mechanics – positions that are experiencing more challenges in terms of recruitment, and where the representation of women dismally low. We are delivering on content attendees want to see.”
