Alberta truckers help build homes for the needy

EDMONTON — Alberta carriers have joined forces with a community humanitarian group to build houses for those in need of shelter.

“The motor transport industry has been a vital part of growth and resource development in Alberta, and continues to be crucial in these times of economic prosperity,” says Habitat for Humanity Edmonton. “Without the contributions and dedication of drivers and trucking companies across Alberta, the current success our province is experiencing would not be possible.”

Habitat for Humanity and the Alberta Motor Transport Association are partnering to provide this opportunity to 4 families in Edmonton. This build, called the “Transport Build,” will be an opportunity for the Alberta trucking industry to come together and work one-on-one with families who need their help.

The Transport Build is located on 97th Street just south of the Yellowhead Trail in Edmonton.

“This is a perfect venue for showcasing the continuing contributions of Alberta’s trucking industry,” says the agency. “The Transport Build will be an opportunity for Alberta’s truckers to give a hand up to 4 families, helping them to build foundations for their future.”

The non-profit group stresses the program “gives families a hand up, not a handout.”

“The homes are not given away. Instead, they are sold to the families at no profit to Habitat, and we finance a zero percent interest mortgage.”

As these families make mortgage payments, Habitat reinvests the money to build more homes for more families. “In this way the donations of the Alberta trucking industry are an investment in the future of Habitat for Humanity, just as they Alberta trucking industry invests in the continued growth and prosperity of our province.”
