Blue Water in line for faster than FAST border pilot

SARNIA, Ont. — "Fast Lite," a proposed national cross-border program that could expedite commercial traffic quicker than FAST, could get a trial run at the Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia, Ont.-Port Huron, Mich.

According to the Times Herald, Blue Water Bridge authorities volunteered their crossing as the proving ground for the proposed pilot project.

Under FAST program, both FAST-approved drivers and the shipment have to be pre-screened in order to use the dedicated FAST lane customs booth at border crossings.

The proposed Fast Lite would reportedly require only one of those requirements to gain access to the FAST infrastructure.
It’s something that the trucking industry has been lobbying for years.

Jennifer Fox, vice president, customs and compliance for the Canadian Trucking Alliance, told local media the group raised the issue in a recent meeting with Public Safety Minister Vic Toews.

Fox said such a program would complement a binational working group focused on trying to eliminate red tape and regulatory redundancy at the border.
