Cargo tankers need anti-rollover retrofits now, says NTSB

WASHINGTON – Anti-rollover retrofits for cargo tank trailers should be mandatory, said The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Given the long life of tankers, it could take 50 years for stability control technology to be implemented without mandated retrofits.

"A rollover prevention program will not eliminate all rollovers due to driver errors," the NTSB wrote in a letter to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) on September 2, but added that a prevention program can be effective in identifying ways for drivers and management to work together to prevent these types of accidents.

The NTSB recommended that cargo tank trailers that weigh over 10,000 pounds should be retrofitted.
