CBP wants trailer number on manifest

WASHINGTON — U.S. Customs and Border Protection is requesting carriers include their trailer licence number on the manifest in an effort to minimize delays at the border.

In a notice to cross-border carriers and customs brokers, CBP says this action will help speed up clearance at the border, according to Windsor, Ont.-based customs firm D. Dent & Associates.

“The majority of manifests currently have the trailer plate number indicated on them. For those that do not, the time it takes the officer in the truck booth to obtain the trailer plate number means additional delay in the clearance of the truck. While the additional processing time per truck is not substantial, the cumulative effect can cause traffic to back up over time,” the agency stated in its letter.
