Cnd truckload rate growth pulls back

TORONTO — Canadian shippers paid higher truck rates in May, although the pace of rising costs has started to slow down.

Overall freight costs rose 3 percent from April, reports the Canadian General Freight Index, with base truckload rates up 2.7 percent.

However, that’s down from the 3.9 percent average rate increase in April, the largest boost this year.

The slower rate increase mirrors trends in the U.S freight market, which reportedly is also showing signs of yielding slightly.

Overall, though, things remain rosier for truckers (less cheery for shippers) than in 2009 when rate costs fell 9.6 percent.
