Congress doesn’t extend heavy truck pilot programs

MONTPELIER, Vt. – President Obama’s powers of persuasion sure ‘aint what they were two years ago.

A pair of pilot projects that operated heavier trucks in Maine and Vermont were not renewed by Congress, despite the Obama Administration’s strong support for making them permanent.

The programs permit 108,000 to 120,000-lb six-axle trucks to operate on interstates and bridges in Vermont and In Maine, 100,000-lb trucks would be allowed.

In a lame duck session after the November mid-term elections, Congress will wrap up 12 federal agency funding bills, including one for the DOT, into one "omnibus" appropriations bill.

It’s possible, though, that language making the heavy truck pilot projects permanent could be included in that bill.
