E.U. wants speed limiters for trucks and buses

BRUSSELS (June 14, 2001) — The European Union Commission is calling for mandatory speed limiters on all heavy trucks and buses to reduce accidents and improve environmental performance.

In a Wall Street Journal report, Transport Commissioner Loyola de Palace said lower speeds result in fewer severe highway accidents and also reduce fuel consumption and component wear.

“It also creates a level playing field amongst transport operators who will no longer feel compelled to break speed limits to gain market advantage,” she added.

If the proposal is approved, the measures will apply to all passenger vehicles with more than eight passenger seats and all commercial trucks over 3.5 tons.

The European Commission doesn’t intend to extend the rule to cars.
