Hero trucker to be honored posthumously

STIRLING, Ont. – Governor General Michele Jean will present the family of the late David Virgoe with a posthumous Medal of Bravery later this summer.

David’s wife Debbie and son Brad will receive the honor, which is awarded to Canadians carrying out "acts of bravery in hazardous circumstances," the Community Press in Stirling, Ont. reported.

In 2007, Innisfil, Ont. driver David Virgoe was headed northbound on 400 south of Barrie when he swerved his empty tanker truck to avoid three cars weaving in and out of traffic. Virgoe, who drove for Wilburn Archer Trucking of Norwood, Ont. was cut off by one the street-racing cars and forced into the median guardrail. He then made a split-second decision.

Rather than allow his truck to slam into oncoming traffic, he swerved to the right, crossed the highway and slammed into a ditch where he died.

Earlier this year, one of the 20-year-old street racers involved said his actions led to the "murder" of Virgoe. All three young men involved are facing sentences.
