La Belle Sourire: Quebec embarks on photo radar project

MONTREAL — Maybe speed limiters in Quebec couldn’t have come at a better time, after all?

Transport Minister Julie Boulet announced Tuesday that the province is set to begin an 18-month, $6.6 million photo radar pilot project to catch more speeders and red light runners.

While truckers who will soon be required to install speed limiters set at 105 km/h might be safe on four-lane highways, it’s expected many of the 15 target sites (6 in Montreal) will be main streets and related intersections.

The project will begin on May 19. There will be a three-month grace period of ‘educational enforcement’ until Aug. 19, during which police will send out notices, but not tickets, to drivers caught breaking traffic rules on camera.

The photos will only identify the license plate, not the driver, so demerit points will not be taken off. However, the owner of the vehicle will get he ticket — even if it’s for just a few kilometers over the limit.

Reportedly, the systems that will be used include cameras attached to traffic lights or fixed to poles on roads and highways as well as mobile machines.

Six locations will be in Montreal, four will be in the South Shore-Monteregie region and five will be in a sector between the Eastern Townships and Quebec City.?
