MacKinnon Wins TCA’s 1999 National Fleet Safety Award

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. [Mar. 22, 2000] -A company-wide commitment to safety is what it took for MacKinnon Transport, Inc., of Guelph, Ont. to win the Grand Prize Awards in the Truckload Carriers Association’s 1999 National Fleet Safety Contest, sponsored by Trailmobile, Inc.

The awards were presented at the March 21st Annual Banquet & Awards Dinner to Ray Haight, President and COO of MacKinnon Transport. MacKinnon Transport won the award for truckload companies in the five to 15 million-mile category.

Haight said MacKinnon Transport believes that a commitment to safety begins with the owners and senior management of the company. The company’s owner-operators and company
drivers are among the best in the industry and the strong in-house training, stringent hiring qualifications, and on-going monitoring of compliance and training needs assures a high quality of customer service, safety and standards. The Chairman, the CEO and the President of the company all spent time as drivers and believe that this has fostered their commitment toward health and safety.

The judging process began with the determination of the top companies in each of six mileage divisions. The division winners were selected based on accident frequency only. The top three winners in each division were then able to compete for the two grand prizes. The grand prize-winning companies were judged on their excellent overall safety programs, both on and off-highway. During the judging, some of the factors considered included safety program organization, employee driver/independent contractor selection procedures, training, supervision, accident investigation, inspection and maintenance of equipment, and outside activities including general highway safety.
