LOUISVILLE, Ken. (Mar. 31, 2005) — Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems’ ABS system with Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Roll Stability Program (RSP) will become an option on several OEM truck brands, including Kenworth, Peterbilt, and International.

Volvo Trucks North America will instead make the ESP system standard on its VN and new VT truck lineup beginning this summer.

The ABS-6 Advanced with ESP will be available in Kenworth this month. For Kenworth the system will initially be available on short wheel base tractors such as fuel haulers, followed by other applications and straight trucks.

Peterbilt will begin offering the system in June for model 387, and in September for models 379, 386, 385, 378, and 357.

International will be begin the first phase of the Bendix ABS-6 with RSP on models 9200i and 9400i conventional tractors beginning in April.

The RSP traction control and roll stability system is an all-axle system that reduces the risk of rollovers through advanced sensing, automatic application of the truck’s brakes, as well as automatic engine dethrottling. It detects a truck’s impending rollover by sensing steer angle, yaw rate, wheel speed and lateral acceleration, and then enable electronic intervention to keep the vehicle steady.

ESP allows operators a stability and traction control system that responds to low and high friction surface scenarios, and mitigates rollovers, jackknifes, and loss of control.

The company is taking the systems on a North American road show for fleet people to test out, including in Toronto on May 12, 2005.

The company also announced enhanced diagnostic capabilities for its new trailer ABS system, TABS-6, and ABS system with RSP. The diagnostic capabilities streamline troubleshooting and repairs for technicians with a trailer Remote Diagnostic Unit (TRDU). It fits in a technician’s pocket and provides immediate system status, displaying all ABS fault info on an LED screen.
