New Brunswick Hears Truckers’ Weight Beefs

SUSSEX, NB — Man, is it ever nice to know someone is listening.

That seems to be the reports coming out of one of the meetings that Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Robert Trevors has been holding in New Brunswick.

The minister held one of three stakeholders sessions on how commercial vehicle weight restrictions are enforced in New Brunswick, reported the Telegraph-Journal.

The main message coming from the crowd of 50 was that there needs to be consistency when it comes to weight restrictions and how they are regulated.

One trucker, reported the Telegraph, said that the inconsistent rules were particularly confusing for long-haul drivers as they moved between provinces.

Trevors said that they are collecting ideas on how best New Brunswick can align their regulations with those of other provinces.

"We need to have industry, from the small truck driver to the large corporation, give ideas of what needs to be fixed, if anything," Trevors said.

The information and suggestions that Trevors and his staff collect during the meetings are slated to go into a report in early 2012.

If it looks like changes in weight enforcement practices are needed, they’ll be implemented gently so as to avoid impacting the industry too heavily.

Officer discretion needs to be wiped out with common sense and consistency, said Mike Johnston, director of compliance and enforcement.

"This practice is not beneficial to the officers either," he told the Telegraph. "This has been on my radar since I came into this role."
