Niagara Border Crossing Costing Truckers Too Much
BUFFALO — A study soon to be released by the Binational Economic and Tourism Alliance calls for increased use of technology to speed border crossings and inspections at Buffalo-Niagara crossings.
The study also calls for an improvement in trusted traveler programs, better traffic conditions information, and more customs staff during busy seasons.
The report cites statistics that show cross-border congestion getting worse, costing Canadian trucking companies more than $9 billion.
The report recommends new technology to help speed things along, like hand-held scanners, as weel as pre-clearance and trusted traveler programs.
The new U.S./Canada joint "Smart Border" program could include many of those initiatives.
The Buffalo-Niagara region had an estimated $70 billion in trade in 2010.
