NJ ponders hiking traffic charges to pay for patrols

TRENTON, N.J. — If you get a traffic ticket in New Jersey in the near future, rest assured that your money could go towards catching you the next time around.

That’s because Sen. Jeff Van Drew, D-Cape has introduced a bill that would add a $40 surcharge to any moving traffic violation. The levy would go towards paying for extra state enforcement in smaller, rural towns.

According to the Vineland Daily Journal, 89 communities were told last month that they have to start paying for their own State Police services. The state’s county communities are looking for millions of dollars to deal with the downloading of services.

Since the last budget was signed, the municipalities have been billed $12.6 million for State Police patrols.
