NY congestion fee rejected

NEW YORK — It’s off again. The controversial plan to impose a hefty charge on all vehicles entering Manhattan during peak weekday hours has been rejected by state lawmakers.

City officials approved the plan weeks ago, but after days of closed-door negotiations, the New York State Legislature failed to act on Monday’s deadline for N.Y. Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposal, Associated Press reports.

The initiative, which was aimed at curbing congestion and pollution, would have charged car drivers $8 between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday; and truckers $21.

The plan ran into objections from legislators from outer boroughs and New York City suburbs who were concerned it would unfairly target commuters and their constituents, according to the AP.
