Ont tops continent for safest road system

TORONTO — Ontario’s roads are the safest in North America, according to the Ontario Safety League.

The agency presented an award to the Ministry of Transportation for having the lowest fatality rate since 1931.

Latest stats show that Ontario’s fatality rate has dropped to its lowest levels of – 0.87 per 10,000 licensed drivers.

Ontario road safety ranking tops all jurisdictions in North America, according to 2006 statistics, well ahead of other comparable regions like New York (10th), Quebec (14th), Michigan (16th) and Ohio (19th).

"Even with more people and vehicles on our roads than ever before, our roads are the safest they have ever been, thanks in part to our dedicated road safety partners, police, and the many Ontario drivers who are out there every day, leading by example."

Safest of all, though, isn’t safe enough. The province has recently introduced further measures mean to cut down on accidents such as mandatory speed limiters on all trucks and banning hand-held cell phones while operating a vehicle.
