Ontario truckers say a second lift axle would improve safety, efficiency

TORONTO (Feb. 1) — Ontario truckers plan to meet with provincial transport officials tomorrow to lobby for allowing at least two axles on a 25-metre B-train configuration.

Carriers have argued that a configuration with two lift axles would be more efficient and safe for operations between Ontario and Michigan, according to the Ontario Trucking Association.

In November, the province amended Regulation 32/94 to allow 25-metre B-trains but restricted the configuration to one lift axle. The amendment requires the axle to be raised while the vehicle is operating in Ontario, and that the remaining axles conform to RTAC standards.

The meeting is scheduled Feb. 2 at Ontario Ministry of Transportation offices at 1201 Wilson Ave., Toronto, East Boardrooms 4, 5, and 6, starting at 10 a.m.
