EDMONTON — Alberta carriers that specialize in oversize loads are about to get a new friend: TRAVIS.

Alberta Transportation has been working on the Transportation Routing and Vehicle Information System (TRAVIS) for a number of years and is just about ready to launch a pilot version to the industry.

The system aims to provide a quick and easy permit application process for oversize loads. Rather than applying for multiple permits, carriers will be able to apply once in the TRAVIS database and carry a load across several municipalities.

Registered carriers will also be able to use the system to check the status of applications and permits.

The Alberta Motor Transport Association has been working with the provincial government to develop TRAVIS and is cautiously optimistic the system will provide the streamlined approach the industry has been requesting.

The AMTA will be meeting with government officials near the end of April to get an update on the program, which is ready to undergo a pilot phase in Grande Prairie, Alta. this spring.

If everything goes according to plan, TRAVIS should be available throughout the province in about a year.
