Peninsula Truck Lines is implementing a Pacific Northwest Compliance Surcharge to help offset rising regulatory and compliance costs associated with operating in Washington and Oregon.

The $3 per shipment fee will go into effect on April 6 and applies to all freight originating in or destined for Washington or Oregon. Peninsula is a less-than-truckload carrier based in Federal Way, Wash., just outside Seattle.

“This surcharge reflects a portion of the additional costs required to operate in an increasingly complex regulatory environment, while continuing to provide the high level of service our customers expect,” Peninsula President Tim Vander Pol said in a statement.

Vander Pol expanded on Peninsula’s announcement in a social media post. He cited Washington’s Climate Commitment Act and Paid Family & Medical Leave Act, as well as Oregon’s Clean Fuels Program and Corporate Activity Tax, among the reasons the new surcharge is needed. There are also multiple county and city fees in each state.

Peninsula published a regulatory summary to further outline the fees imposed by Washington and Oregon. “We’ve worked hard for years to absorb these costs internally, but the cumulative burden has reached a point where separating them transparently is the most responsible approach,” Vander Pol said.

Peninsula was founded in 1951, though the Vander Pol family has been involved in transportation in the Pacific Northwest since the 1930s.
