Truck driver vacancies drop 36% in Q2 2024 as non-driving roles lag behind

Truck driver vacancies in Canada dropped by 36% in Q2 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to Trucking HR Canada’s (THRC) latest national job vacancy update. This decrease represents a drop of 8,510 open positions for transport truck drivers, reflecting an easing of labor pressures in driving roles.

The report highlights that the job vacancy rate for truck drivers dropped to 4.5%, down from 7% in Q2 2023. Across the broader trucking and logistics sector, the vacancy rate declined from 4.5% to 3.5% over the same period. However, non-driving roles have not seen the same level of improvement, indicating ongoing labor challenges in other key positions within the sector.

“While labor market pressures are easing for truck drivers for the time being, it is less the case for non-driving roles,” said Craig Faucette, chief program officer at Trucking HR Canada, in a release. “That is why we continue to advance workforce development solutions in anticipation of long-term labor challenges. Our labor market forecast out to 2030 confirms that demand will continue to significantly outpace supply, and we could see as many as 40,400 vacancies in our sector by then.”

  • We need the Ont and Alberta to pay 50% of the country insurance cost for first year truck drivers that do a graduated training and driver program that have lived in Canada a min of 9 yrs in a role by working with B C and Manitoba and or SGI to provide insurance for truck bus and.disabled taxis and school transportation with $ from the carbon tax and a fee from shipping and receiving that do not provide overnight parking. If we do this and bring in hourly pay with overtime and housing regulations for those that come in on work permit or live in remote parts of Canada we can have a surplus of truck and school bus drivers in my opinion.

    • Your proposal makes a lot of sense, although it will be hard to accept since the companies are filling the driver position with steering holders.
