Unimog: Strictly Commercial

Freightliner LLC doused reports that it planned to market the Unimog, a hardy class-6 vehicle made by Mercedes Benz, as a sport-utility vehicle along the lines of General Motors’ Hummer. Freightliner says while the Unimog-a 50-year-old product line-has a cadre of off-highway enthusiasts, it will be targeted at only commercial markets in North America, notably utility and emergency fleets that operate in difficult weather and terrain. Freightliner expects to sell 300 Unimogs in 2002, when it is scheduled to begin importing them from Germany. The trucks will be available from Freightliner dealers.
