AUSTIN, Tex. — Cargo thefts appeared to have slowed somewhat this past spring, according to FreightWatch International.

However, May numbers for two of the most highly targeted U.S. states – New Jersey and California — are still pending.

There was a 50 percent increase, though, in the number of thefts involving multiple trailers stolen during a single incident compared with the same period in 2010.

The average number of stolen trailer during multi-theft incidents increased from 2 to 3 trailers/containers.

The top five states for cargo theft for the period were California, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey and Texas.

Nearly 85 percent of all reported incidents involved the theft of trailers, with 64 percent of those occurred at unsecured parking lots.

Building/Industrial, Electronics and Food/Drinks were the most targeted product types, specifically copper, steel, TVs and computers, chicken, beef, and frozen food.

Saturday through to Monday were the days with the highest cargo theft activity.
