MONTREAL, Que. — The federal government has launched the environmental assessment phase of construction of a new bridge over the St. Lawrence River in Montreal.

“This construction of the new bridge will create jobs and is necessary for our country’s economic viability,” said federal Transport Minister, Denis Lebel. “Today, I am pleased to officially launch the environmental assessment for this project, an essential part of the planning process for the new bridge. Meanwhile, we will continue to ensure the safety of this vital crossing.”

It’s estimated $20 billion in international trade crosses the existing bridge each year. While construction of a new bridge spanning the St. Lawrence River gets underway, the feds said they’ll continue funding safety improvements to the existing Champlain Bridge.
