SASK. EMERGENCY PERSONNEL AS YET UNPROTECTED
REGINA, Sask. — Truck drivers may soon need to slow down when approaching emergency vehicles at the sides of Saskatchewan roads.
Concerns about the safety of police officers, paramedics and other emergency personnel have been raised and a proposed amendment will require all motorists to reduce speeds while approaching those peace officers.
Current legislation requires drivers to reduce speeds when passing highway workers, but does not address emergency personnel.
The proposed amendment would require a driver to reduce speeds to 60 km per hour when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the highway while its lights are flashing.
