GRAND BEND, Ont. — The Truck News team will be among the anxious fans at the Grand Bend Motorplex on Sept. 7 when the annual Big Rig Truck Race makes its debut.

“A quarter mile track, up to 20,000lb of pure truck sitting at the starting line, the roar of the engines, the excitement of the crowd, the drivers are ready, the light is green,” says Truck News publisher Rob Wilkins, “now that’s excitement!”

Grand Bend Motorplex which has been in business since 1995 is Canada’s largest drag racing facility and provides a full-season of drag racing events.

“We are excited about the opportunity the Big Rig Truck racing brings, it’s impressive to see those trucks race down the track,” says Grand Bend Motorplex spokesperson, Paul Spriet. “This type of race is very popular in the U.S. and we think it has great potential to become one of our bigger events.”

Corey Jarvis, of Jarvis Enterprises, is the brain behind the race.

“I am a race fan,” says Jarvis, “I thought it would be exciting, Grand Bend was excited and numerous drivers I talked to said they were excited, here we are two years later.”

Any truck of any type can race, no previous race experience needed and no are cars allowed. The 2002 Big Rig Truck Race will include four categories: Big Rigs, Heavy Haulers, Super Duty and Tuff Trucks.

A Show and Shine as well as a Skills Competition will round out the festivities.

Like most events says Jarvis, “We will need support from sponsors and exhibitors in order to make the event a success, plus we need to see those drivers bring their trucks out.”
