COLUMBUS, Ind. — Cummins says its medium-duty ISB engine has been certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The EPA approval means the unit complies with the strict new emission standards that go into effect for most diesels as of Oct. 1.

The 5.9-liter ISB engine is used in trucks, buses, RV’s, fire trucks, step vans and many other medium duty applications. The ISB has earned a reputation as an industry leader in performance, fuel economy and durability, according to the manufacturer.

“Customers will love this engine because they can maintain their maintenance intervals, have better performance and enjoy the same or better fuel economy,” says Tom Kieffer, executive director of marketing at Cummins. “We have extensively tested these engines in real life applications, and the results are terrific.”

The new ISB was introduced in Europe more than a year ago and is proving to be a reliability and performance leader. To meet the EPA emissions standard, a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) subsystem was added.
