MONCTON, N.B. — The Petitcodiac River crossing has finally begun to get some much needed attention and renovations.

The provincial Department of Transportation awarded the $7.7 million contract to Caldwell and Ross Ltd. on Sept. 6. The Fredericton-based company is responsible for erecting the bridge’s substructure, including its seven piers, two abutments, and approach work.

Transportation Minister, Percy Mockler, says the project is still on schedule. The builders of this first phase will be on-site until their work is done in March 2004.

The substructure of the $24.5 million bridge is due for completion in 2004, while final details like the observation deck, final paving, lighting, and approaches should end the project in 2005.
