WASHINGTON, D.C. — A massive blizzard is blasting the Eastern U.S. resulting in road closures across several states.

A state of emergency has been declared in D.C., Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware and Maryland as snow and sleet continue to fall. High winds are causing snow to drift, reducing visibility. A blizzard warning has been issued in New York City and several other major cities across the northeastern U.S.

Snow fell over the region steadily overnight, and is expected to continue today. Further south, freezing rain is also creating treacherous conditions on the highways. Law enforcement officers are urging everyone who can stay home to do so.

The storm will be felt in Canada, but to a lesser extent than in the U.S. Toronto is expecting some snow today and other regions in Eastern Canada may also face poor driving conditions as the storm moves through.
