Government launches chip seal experiment on Trans Labrador Highway
ST. JOHN’S, Nfld. — The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has decided to apply chip seal on two sections of the Trans Labrador Highway between Wabush and Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
Approximately seven kilometres of chip seal will be placed on the Trans Labrador Highway just outside of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and approximately eight kilometres on the highway east of Wabush. This project is being tested on a trial basis in order to determine its suitability to the highway and performance in this climate.
The primary advantage of chip seal is that it provides a protective coating to road surfaces, increasing its durability and skid resistance. An additional benefit of using chip seal is that it will reduce dust on the road.
“This project is part of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s ongoing commitment to improve Labrador’s transportation infrastructure,” said Premier Roger Grimes. “I am pleased to see work continue with the Trans Labrador Highway to ensure a better highway for the transport of people and goods across Labrador.”
Works, Services and Transportation Minister, Jim Walsh, said tenders for the application of the chip seal will be called this week.
