VANCOUVER, B.C. — Transportation infrastructure investment is a top priority for the Government of the Northwest Territories and a key reason for its recent enrollment as a member of the Western Transportation Advisory Council (WESTAC).

As global demand continues to rise for commodities, Northern Canada is positioned to play an integral role in Canada’s continued economic growth. Oil and gas exploration, expansion of the diamond-mining sector, accommodating the proposed Mackenzie Valley gas pipeline and many other opportunities related to resource development predict a bright future for the Northwest Territories.

“By joining WESTAC we give the Northwest Territories a stronger voice in western Canada’s transportation sector,” said Michael McLeod, Minister of Transportation.
“Partnerships with WESTAC’s range of prominent transportation stakeholders will help to insure the transportation system adequately serves the northern industry and communities.”

WESTAC is a non-profit association of major transportation organizations, represented by senior business, labour and government decision-makers. Its objective is to promote transportation as a critical sector supporting trade, jobs and a high standard of living.

Other WESTAC members include the Yukon and Alberta Governments, CN Rail, the Edmonton Regional Airports Authority, Transport Canada, and various coastal B.C. port authorities.
