LANGLEY, B.C. — The Fraser Basin Council has launched an incentive program for fleets that adopt the newest generation of smog-free trucks.

The organization is the first to respond to the Canadian Trucking Alliance’s appeal to reward fleets for early adoption of the cleaner-burning heavy-duty trucks. With the help of the B.C. Trucking Association, CTA has been promoting the environmental benefits of promoting the use of the newest engine technologies.

The Fraser Basin Council announced its incentive program through its Green Fleets B.C. program. The Council has agreed to make it more feasible for fleets to evaluate smog-reducing technologies. Up to $10,000 per vehicle in funding is available to fleets that meet the Fraser Basin Council’s enviroTruck standard, the CTA announced. The organization said the intent is to get the new environmentally-friendly trucks off the drawing board and onto the roads of B.C.

“Thanks to the hard work of B.C. Trucking Association and the foresight of the province of British Columbia the enviroTruck initiative has gone from concept to reality,” said CTA CEO David Bradley. “CTA will continue to lobby the federal government and work with provincial associations to encourage other provincial governments to follow the BC example.”

Those fleets who benefit from the funding will provide monthly usage statistics and comments on their experience with their enviroTrucks and their components. Applications will be accepted until Feb. 15.

“It’s a modest start but a significant step in the right direction which we are hopeful can be built upon over time,” said Bradley. “It would also be very helpful if Transport Canada were to step-up to the plate.”
