Saskatchewan manufacturing exports surge
REGINA, Sask. — An economic slowdown in much of Canada seems to have skimmed over Saskatchewan, which reported manufacturing shipments 10 times the national average in June.
Manufacturing shipments in Saskatchewan for June reached $1.1 billion, a 27.9% increase the previous June. It’s the highest growth among the four western provinces, according to Statistics Canada.
“The performance of Saskatchewan’s manufacturing industry continues to help set the pace, both nationally and in Western Canada,” Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. “We are a province of exporters, and the sustained growth being generated by our innovative manufacturers is one of our strongest assets for continued prosperity.”
In the first six months of 2008, Saskatchewan’s international exports surged 43.5% to $14.4 billion over 2007, the highest growth rate in Canada.
