N.S. sees huge tax windfall
HALIFAX, N.S. – The government of Nova Scotia is expecting to get an extra $14.6 million by the end of March on the back of blended sales taxes collected from rising diesel, gasoline and heating oil costs.
“Gasoline and diesel fuel prices are both up almost 27 per cent this year to date, while home heating fuel prices are up almost 46 per cent,” says the internal government analysis, written in November.
However, trucking fleets actually won’t be among the ones contributing to the jackpot: almost all comes from consumers because most businesses get a rebate for the 15 per cent tax, say provincial Finance Department documents. n
