Canadian autonomous trucking developer Waabi has named Lior Ron as chief operating officer as it prepares to scale operations and launch fully driverless trucks later this year.

Ron spent the past decade as founder and CEO of Uber Freight, growing it into an end-to-end logistics platform with more than US$5 billion in annual revenue and serving one in three Fortune 500 shippers. In his new role, he will lead Waabi’s go-to-market strategy, expand strategic partnerships, and guide the company through growth while maintaining its innovation focus, according to a news release.

“After years of focused development, it is clear that the moment of autonomous trucks has decisively arrived and that this technology, which will drive profound societal change, is ready for commercial prime time,” Ron said in the release.

Waabi founder and CEO Raquel Urtasun said Ron brings “that rare combination of technical expertise, deep industry knowledge, and proven execution” and will help accelerate commercialization of the company’s autonomous solutions.
