Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) said in her State of the State address that the new Gordie Howe International Bridge will open later this year.

Whitmer made the comment several weeks after President Donald Trump threatened to block the opening of the new bridge linking Detroit and Windsor, Ont., arguing that the United States should be compensated first.

Work on the multi-billion-dollar bridge began in 2018. The exact opening date has not yet been set.

The existing span is the Ambassador Bridge, owned by Matthew Moroun. He recently donated $1 million to MAGA Inc., a political action committee supporting Trump, according to documents from the Federal Election Commission.

In her speech, Whitmer touted not only the first new bridge connecting Michigan to Canada in over a century, but also the state’s having “fixed 26,500 lane miles of road and almost 2,000 bridges, supporting over 200,000 jobs” since she took office.
