Alpine Produces Industry’s First CNG-Fuelled Shredder Truck
KITCHENER, ON – Truck Builder Alpine Shredders Ltd., has produced the first shredder truck powered entirely by compressed natural gas (CNG).
Alpine’s Shredder 720 STAK CNG is built around a Peterbilt 382 chassis and powered by a Cummins Westport ISL G engine.
Alpine is a Canadian company with more than 250 trucks at work across North America. More than 90 percent of Alpine’s truck operate in the U.S.A.
“Leading through innovation has always been our strength,” says Alpine COO Peter Viveen. “The opportunity to develop the first CNG shred truck was a perfect fit for Alpine.”
“We produce a lot of firsts,” adds Alpine Sales Manager Guy Wakutz.
“Although initial price is higher, the return on investment with CNG is recovered after a couple years and then you enjoy further cost savings for the life of the vehicle,” Wakutz says. He also mentioned that the fueling infrastructure for CNG is more developed in the U.S. than in Canada.
Current national average price of diesel is $3.98 a gallon while CNG diesel gallon equivalent is $2.10.
