Returning PEI truck drivers must self isolate

by Today's Trucking

Truck drivers who live in Prince Edward Island will need to self isolate when returning from trips outside Atlantic Canada – regardless of their vaccine status — until they have received negative results from a Covid-19 test.

Those tests will be required within 72 hours of their return to Canada’s island province.

The measures will last until at least May 17, as the province reacts to new cases of Covid-19.

The National Microbiology Lab and provincial lab say four recent cases of Covid-19 are linked to the B117 variant first associated with the United Kingdom.

“Additional safety measures are needed to further reduce the risk of importation of Covid-19 and lower the likelihood that people come here and spread or get sick with Covid, putting additional stress on our healthcare system,” said Dr. Heather Morrison, chief public health officer.

Prince Edward Island currently has 13 active cases of COVID-19 and has had 173 positive cases since the onset of the pandemic. Information about the province’s COVID-19 cases is available online.

  • In Ontario the customs at the border are asking people who have been staying at the homeless shelters when sick or in the bunk House at the green house where they going to stay. I took diesel fuel out to 3 former truck drivers and and a injured boat captain with Colin cancer into the bush at 2200 hours tonight after I got a call from the O P P . The homeless shelter in Huron County shut down 10 days ago because of covid restrictions. No shelter in London had spots for these sick truck drivers. One tested positive for covid 15 days ago so was kicked out the isolation hotel Monday. We need a plan for all cross border and cross country truck drivers when they are sick or their trucks are in the shop. I hope P E I plan works. Because Ont gov is a disaster for handling of covid for lower income essential workers and homeless people and sick truck drivers.

  • And the truckers continue to suffer… hopefully they will provide bathrooms for them to use! Maybe when their grocery & retail store shelves are empty, all involved will grow a few more brain cells and realize it’s time to stop abusing and neglecting truckers!! So many people are rude and totally ignorant of the ESSENTIAL service truckers provide. I wish every trucker in Canada & the US would stop driving for 2 weeks and see if the trucker-haters have enough functioning brain cells to have any sort of awakening. @Ron, I too would like to know why your reply was “Starve then” ??? That is a perfect example of ignorance!! Do you have any idea of what truckers go through to get EVERYTHING YOU BUY to store shelves or online stores like Amazon or Costco? You may think some truckers look like slobs or bums sometimes… That’s because they are working so f*****g hard to get goods to the whole country… with lack of sleep, ridiculously tight schedules, few washrooms to use, few truck stops (especially in Canada!) and often crappy pay!! Why don’t you try spreading a little love – you might be happier?
