Cummins integrates natural gas engine and transmission
Cummins and Cummins Westport are joining forces on a new fully integrated natural gas powertrain to support heavy-duty applications.
The Cummins ISX12N natural gas engine combines with the Endurant HD N 12-speed automated transmission from Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies for the ISX12N+Endurant HD N powertrain.
The end result, Cummins says, is a powertrain that supports regional heavy-duty fleets looking to reduce carbon footprints. It lowers NOx emissions by 90% when compared to existing limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The ISX12N natural gas engine comes in at 400 hp and delivers 1,450 lb-ft of torque, and can run on compressed natural gas (CNG), liquid natural gas (LNG), or renewable natural gas (RNG). When using RNG, it actually achieves net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at or below zero.
Related updates to the Endurant HD N transmission include software functions and calibrations, but also a diaphragm spring clutch to better meet the natural gas engine loads.
As an integrated package, the engine and transmission improve launch performance, low-speed maneuverability, and shifting, Cummins says.
