THE TWNA TECH AWARD GOES TO…

Congratulations to Mack Trucks, whose Twin Y Air Suspension has been named winner of the Truck Writers of North America’s Technical Achievement Award. I chair the committee and had the honour of presenting the award to Mack at TMC. The award has been presented for 23 years now, and during that time has recognized a wide range of technical achievements.

The Twin Y got our attention primarily because of its simple design, which reduces weight by about 400 lbs compared to other air suspensions. It offers a smooth ride (several of us editors on the committee have driven it), which is purported to reduce drive tire wear by up to 20%. We can’t validate that claim, but if true, that’s just gravy. It’s the weight savings and simplicity that impressed us. As fellow committee member Tom Berg summed up, “When you cut weight and simplify a component at the same time, and it still works well, that’s a winner.” Congrats, Mack.
