Clarios vows to eliminate dead batteries

Clarios is promising to bring an end to dead batteries with the introduction of the first smart absorbent glass mat (AGM) truck batteries.

Battery failures are the third leading cause of fleet downtime, the company says. At the Technology & Maintenance Council’s spring meeting it followed up on a passenger car battery launch at the Consumer Electronics Show, where it had unveiled a smart battery that notifies owners about battery status and health in real time.

The truck versions are set to enter limited production this year, and full production next year. Currently, Clarios is looking to integrate battery health information with telematics offerings used by fleets. It’s also testing the technology with several truck fleets.

Fleets will be notified when a battery needs replacement so they can avoid unplanned downtime.

Clarios is a global battery manufacturer, with products in 30% of the world’s vehicles. In North America it operates under the Optima and DieHard brands, and also provides white label products to a range of distributors.
