STOP CELLPHONE USE

FleetSafer Mobile is a cell phone app available from GPS to Go, an Ottawa company. It prevents BlackBerry and Android smartphone users from texting and answering calls in moving vehicles, though drivers can continue to make and receive hands-free phone calls. The software also includes an auto-reply function, which lets callers know the user is driving.

It consists of three components: an administrative portal to create, configure and manage safe driving policies; a client software application installed on the driver’s  phone; and a customer-defined trigger mechanism that automatically detects when employees are driving.

Using a combination of plug-n-go GPS tracking hardware from GPS to GO and  ZoomSafer software, the system automatically starts up once it senses movement of 15 mph, and locks the keypad and screen so that drivers can’t text or e-mail until they’re out of the vehicle and command the software to stop.

Drivers can still take calls via Bluetooth, earbud, or speakerphone, using an on-board voice dialer with pre-programmed convenience keys and an inbound call manager. Outbound calls can be made via voice command. The software reads aloud names or phone numbers of inbound calls, or automatically puts them through if they are on a priority contact list.

E-mails and text alerts are suppressed, and a customizable message will let the sender know that the message has been received, but cannot be answered immediately.
